1. Get an Email Sign-up on the Home Page
No excuses - do it today! This is the most effective thing you can do for your website. People like your art, they may
not buy it first time around, but they may very well want to see new work that you produce. Have visitors give you a
name and email so you can keep in touch. Then get a newsletter started! You will make sales if you consistently
stay in touch with site visitors.
2. Put 5 items for sale on your site with Paypal’s free “Buy It Now” buttons
You can do this in just a few minutes too - set up a free account with Paypal.com and then create some Buy It Now
buttons for your website. Place at least one somewhere on your home page, and you can create another page for
your “shop.” You want to make it easy to for your customers to give you business, and this is a great way to do so!
And remember, if you’re selling print-on-demand art prints (visit PrintThatImage.com for more info) then you can
sell the prints before spending a dime. No inventory, a free shopping cart tool, and online sales make for a great
business model!
3. Insert free Google Analytics code onto each page to monitor traffic
Most DIY website tools have a simple way to integrate HTML code into your website by simply copy/pasting. Or, if you
have a web designer this should be a no brainer for him/her. Visit http://analytics.google.com, set up a free account,
and paste the code they give you into every page on your site. Then you can track all sorts of traffic trends - number of
visitors, length of visit, pages visited, where they found you, and how many pages they visited on your site, just to
name a few! This will really help you improve your site over time.
4. Add written descriptions of each artwork
The problem with search engines is that they can’t “see” images. So you have to help them out by verbally
describing each of your artworks with text on your website. You can add these descriptions below the image on the
same page for visitors to read. Your DIY website builder should also have a way for you to add short image
descriptions known as “alt tags” into the background of any image you insert. That means if someone is searching
for “landscape oil painting” on a Google image search and you paint landscapes in oil, you actually have a chance of
being found. Get to it!
5. Submit your website to the major search engines
You can’t just publish your website and expect Google, Yahoo, and Bing to find it in the next few weeks without your
help. They might, but they might not. Over 10 million new sites go up every month, so you have to give the search
engines a hand. So, once your site is online go to the following websites to let the search engines know you’re there:
Google: http://www.google.com/addurl/ (you’ll need to set up a free Google account first)
Yahoo & Bing: https://ssl.bing.com/webmaster/SubmitSitePage.aspx (Bing & Yahoo have merged their search
engine submissions so you just need to use this one!)
If you implement all of these steps then you’ll be a few steps closer to online success. Good luck, and don’t hesitate
